RLSK works in the area of Sunderbans in West Bengal since its inception in the year . Sunderbans is the most promonint part of the largest delta in the world, which is formed by the rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna. Parts of Sunderbans in West Bengal state of India is enlisted as UNESCO World Heritage sites. In spite of it’s status of Mariene Protected Areas (MPA) and its unconducive nature for habitation, it’s densely populated, with villages spread across the forest. Increasing deforestation and damage to the mangrove forests are not only leaving the coasts progressively exposed and more vulnerable to stroms, at the same time it also depletes the rich biodiversity of the region.
Sunderbans MPA in West Bengal is a swamp adjascent to sea and is intersected by several river tributeries, creeks and canals. Plastic waste is a grave problem in the area, as evidend from the plastic clogged mangroves and plastic- chocked fish farms, the plastic waste, mostly infused through the food supply chain into the ecosystem of the delta region. Sustainable use of marine resources and responsible management of fisheries, aquaculture and tourism is the need of the hour to save this unique biodiversity in Sunderbans. The current innovation facilitates the adoption of practices around use of non- plastic materials in daily life and creates systems and structures at community as well as government level to ensure sustainable adoption of Blue Economy practices.
Initiation of journey of RLSK could be traced back to a prolific discussion and soul searching by a group of dedicated and responsible citizens belonging to the area of Sunderbans, who wanted to bring some tangible changes in lives of poor and underprivileged people. During the past several years, RLSK has done quite an outstanding
works in the areas ecological conservation, disaster response, recovery and risk reduction, women empowerment, awareness generation on various issues such as health & hygiene, sanitation, environment protection, education, income generation, SHG and microfinance, alternative livelihoods and entrepreneurship development for women and youth.
